Peggy Cardwell Johnson, age 91, of Sweeden, peacefully entered her heavenly home on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family at her residence. An Edmonson County native, Peggy was born on July 25, 1934, to the late Julius Neil and Lonis Basham Cardwell. She shared a devoted marriage with her husband, John Henry Johnson, until his passing on January 8, 2008.
Peggy was a woman whose life was defined by hard work, kindness, and an unwavering love for others. Throughout her working years, she faithfully served her community for more than thirty-seven years as a cook at Kyrock Elementary School, where generations of students were blessed by her wonderful meals, warm smile and caring spirit. She also dedicated over a decade of service to Park Mammoth Resort and worked several years at Kellwood Manufacturing.
Known for her friendly nature and genuine interest in people, Peggy never met a stranger. She found great joy in serving her community, volunteering her time at the Edmonson County Senior Center and assisting at election polls. She was gifted with talented hands and a generous heart, spending countless hours quilting treasured keepsakes, tending her garden, preparing delicious meals for family and friends, and enjoying puzzles. Yet, among all her accomplishments and interests, her greatest joy and proudest role was that of mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her world, and she cherished every moment spent creating memories with those she loved. She was a member of Sweeden Missionary Baptist Church, and lived her life guided by her Christian faith, demonstrating compassion, humility, and love through both her words and actions.
She leaves to cherish her memory— her children, Margaret Houchin (David) of Lexington, Elbert Johnson (Mollie) of Sweeden, Delbert Johnson (Kim) and Tony Johnson (Sheila), both of Roundhill; grandchildren, Amy Houchin Watts (Tom), Stephanie Johnson Parrish (Robbie), Jeffrey Houchin (Erin), Kelly Johnson Bratcher (Ben), Chris Johnson (Jessica), Derek Johnson, and Holly Johnson Minton (Daniel); seventeen beloved great-grandchildren; her sister, Regina Cardwell Billings; a special niece, Vanessa Norton (Buster); and special caregivers who became like family to her, Kathy Wilson, Elbie Wilson, Butch Sexton, Stephanie Jones, and Tameeka Jacobs. She also leaves behind several other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends who will miss her deeply. In addition to her parents and husband, Peggy was preceded in death by her children, Patricia Johnson and Michael Johnson; her brothers, Neil and Jimmy Cardwell; and her sisters, Madge Raymer Lashley and Carolyn Eiler.
The interment will be in Sweeden Church Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Sweeden Church Cemetery c/o Edd Williams, or Lexington Woman’s Club Clothe A Child Fund c/o Beth Hill 120 Edgemoor Drive, Lexington, KY 40503.
