She was known for her kind and gentle heart, her thoughtfulness toward others, and her wonderful sense of humor.
Laurene Stewart, age 89, of Mt. Washington, departed this life on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Norton Brownsboro Hospital. Born on February 28, 1937, in Edmonson County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Anna York Gross. Laurene was united in marriage to her loving husband, Randall A. Stewart, and they shared a life filled with love and treasured memories until he was called home to his eternal rest.
Laurene retired as a school bus driver for Morgan County Schools, a role that gave her the opportunity to spend time around children, whom she dearly loved. She had a special appreciation for their innocence, honesty, and pure hearts, and their presence brought her great joy. A woman of deep faith, Laurene was a beloved member of Fairmount Church of Christ in Bloomfield, where she cherished her church family and her relationship with the Lord. Her faith was an important part of who she was, and she found comfort and strength in the love of God and those around her.
Laurene found joy in the simple things in life. She loved to read, spend time surfing the web, admiring the beauty of nature, and especially enjoyed watching birds. She was known for her kind and gentle heart, her thoughtfulness toward others, and her wonderful sense of humor. She had a way of making people smile and was the kind of person whose caring nature left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know her. Her love was often expressed through the little things—her thoughtfulness, her laughter, and the genuine interest she took in the lives of others.
Those left to honor and cherish Laurene’s memory include her children, Vera Ann Baker of Mt. Washington and Kerry Lee Vincent of Indianapolis. Besides her loving husband and parents, Laurene was preceded in death by her daughter, Marie Vincent; son-in-law, Allen Baker; and her siblings, Tracy Biddle, Anderson Gross, Charles Gross, Alvey Gross, Morris Gross, Murray Gross, Donald Gross, Randolph Gross, and Jack Dean Gross.
Laurene’s earthly journey has come to a peaceful close, but the love she shared and the memories she created will remain in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in New Liberty Cemetery, where they will be together once more.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Liberty Cemetery Fund, c/o JoAnn Baldock, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
