Janice Woosley Young, 81, of Crawfordsville, IN passed away on Thursday, November 16, 2023. Janice was born August 16, 1942 in Big Reedy, KY to the late Alton Burks and Edna Mae Tomes Woosley. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Gene Young; two brothers, Sheridan and Alben Woosley; sister Joyce Harrison, brother-in-law, Jack Harrison, and sister-in-law Myra Woosley.
Janice is survived by her children, Jay (Sherry) Young of Waynetown, IN and Erin Young of Indianapolis, IN; and grandchildren, Makhalea (Chris) and Shane Young; one brother, Terrell Woosley (Mary Ann); sister-in-law Lillie Woosley, and several nieces and nephews.
Janice was a graduate of Western Kentucky University, where she met Ray. Ray and Janice were married on June 13, 1964, a week after graduating from WKU, with Janice wearing the wedding gown she had sewn herself on “Mamaw” Woosley’s old treadle sewing machine.
They settled in New Albany and Greenville, IN before moving to Crawfordsville, IN upon retirement to be able to enjoy being wonderful grandparents to Shane and Makhalea. Janice was a lifelong librarian working at Hazelwood Jr High School in New Albany, as well as Iroquois Public Library in Louisville, KY.
Janice had many talents and interests. She loved to sew, quilt, do puzzles, crossword puzzles and play scrabble (especially with cousin Julia Ann). She also was an avid tennis fan, which she passed on to daughter Erin, and they enjoyed going to the annual tennis tournament in Cincinnati for many years together.
One of her greatest joys was to travel; she had a deep love of the ocean, and she and Ray shared many trips from Florida to Maine to Nova Scotia where they enjoyed seeing as many lighthouses as they could. Their final big trip with dear friends was also their first flight; to London, England! They toured England and Scotland. Which leads to one of Janice’s other great loves, she enjoyed all things British and learning about the English royalty, including the Crown Jewels which she got to see in person. She also enjoyed many trips out “West” with her brother Alben.
But beyond all of these, she loved her family the very most.
Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Church Cemetery.
