Obituary

Listen to Obituary

David Bruce Witty, age 63, of Merry Oaks, departed this life at his residence on Saturday, May 2, 2026, surrounded by the love and presence of his family. A native of Barren County, David was born on November 18, 1962, to the late Buster and Marie Witty. David shared a beautiful life and enduring love with his devoted wife, Leigh Mercer Witty, his caretaker, helpmate and best friend of thirty-four years, who remains to cherish his memory. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, unwavering companionship and raised their son, Brandon, who was his Dad’s pride and joy. During David’s final battle, Brandon provided the same love and compassion to care for his parents that he had witnessed and learned from watching David care for his own mother.

For many years, David worked as a truck driver with Averitt Express, a career he truly loved. The open road suited him well, and along the way, he formed countless friendships that lasted a lifetime. He was a man of strong faith, a member of the Church of Christ, and lived by the values and traditions he held dear.

In his later years, David found his greatest joy in life’s simple blessings. He loved spending time outdoors—crappie fishing on quiet waters, hunting deer and turkey, tending to his garden, and preserving the fruits of his labor through canning. He also found comfort in cooking and sharing meals, moments that brought family and friends together. These everyday pleasures reflected a life well lived and a man who appreciated the beauty in simplicity, valuing hard work and resourcefulness.

In addition to his beloved wife, Leigh, David leaves behind his son, Brandon David Witty of Merry Oaks, who will carry forward his father’s legacy and love. He is also survived by his sister, Karen Sue Witty Head of Louisville; his mother-in-law, Glenna Mercer; his brother-in-law, Eric Mercer (Tatiana); his sister-in-law, Karen Witty; and his cherished nieces and nephews, Isabella and Camilla Mercer, Parker Head, Logan, Andrew, and Alex Witty. He also leaves behind a host of dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him and who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his brothers, Mark and James Witty; his nephew, Hunter Witty; and his father-in-law, Richard Mercer.

The interment will be in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to: T.J. Samson Hospice or Shanti Niketan Hospice Home.
